NEWS SCOPE PRODUCERS Goodin to succeed MDU chief, Knife River veteran Hildestad Terry Hildestad David Goodin Terry Hildestad will retire in January after six years as president and chief executive officer of MDU Resources Group in Bismarck, N.D., capping a 38-year career that began with the company's Knife River Corp. subsidiary. Following his 1991 appointment as president, he oversaw Knife River's expansion in aggregates, ready mixed con- crete and road-building businesses, from the Dakotas to the West Coast and to Iowa and Texas. Construction ma- terials emerged as a complimentary business to parent MDU's core utility and energy operations. "The value of the company's assets has grown nearly 50 percent since [Terry Hildestad] became president and chief executive officer. Equally important, he has kept us financially strong as the nation's economy struggled," says MDU Chairman Harry Pearce. "Under Terry's leadership we have maintained a strong balance sheet, good liquidity and healthy cash flows that al- lowed us to both withstand the recession and invest in internal growth that has positioned us to be very competitive as the economy recovers." The MDU board of directors unanimously elected David Goodin, 50, to succeed Hildestad January 4, 2013. He will become a member of the corporation's board of directors at the same time. Goodin currently is president and chief ex- ecutive officer of MDU Resources' four utility businesses— Montana- Dakota Utilities Co., Great Plains Natural Gas Co., Cascade Natural Gas Corp. and Intermountain Gas Co.—that collectively serve nearly 1 million customers. GRANITEROCK APPOINTS SQUERI CEO Tom Squeri The board of Gran- ite Rock Co. in Watsonville, Calif., has completed a succession plan after the untimely drowning death of President and CEO Bruce Woolpert, naming Tom Squeri to the helm. A Santa Clara Uni- versity and Santa Clara Law School grad- uate, Squeri has served as general counsel since joining the aggregate, ready mixed and roadbuilding operator in 1998. More recently gaining the vice president title, he has also led resource development and environmental man- agement teams, and joined the Granite- rock executive committee. Board and Woolpert family members targeted selec- tion of the next generation of leadership from within the 112-year-old company to preserve its culture and values. Mark Kaminski, named acting president and chief executive officer in late June, continues as Graniterock chairman. SEPTEMBER 2012 | 13
