www.concreteproducts.com April 2014 • 25 NEWS SCOPE PRODUCERS The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute is accepting entries for its 2014 Design Awards competition entries through May 19. Now in its 52nd year, the awards program recognizes design excellence, innova- tion, and construction quality using precast concrete. All winning projects will be showcased at the 2014 PCI Conven- tion and National Bridge Conference in September, and be included in a summary feature article that appears in PCI Journal as well as in Aspire and Ascent magazines. Throughout the past half century, the PCI Design Awards program has helped the design and construction community innovate and advance by showcasing ideas that push the envelope, overcome challenges, and improve upon existing concepts. This year's program also focuses on how the use of precast concrete enables a project to meet its high performance goals. Entrants are encouraged to share these details in their submittals. Entries are accepted, free of charge, in two primary catego- ries: buildings and transportation structures. Within each primary category there are several subcategories. Buildings examples include commercial and entertainment, institutional, housing and residential, industrial and warehouse, and custom solutions. Transportation exam- ples include bridges (new, rehabilitated, and non-highway) and special transportation solutions. In addition to these best-in-class awards, spe- cial awards will be given for industry advancement, sustainable design, and the best all-precast concrete structure or solution. Independent juries of industry experts will consider creativity and ingenuity in the use of precast concrete to achieve aesthetic expression, function, economy, and sustainability. Designated juries for buildings, transportation and special categories will also recog- nize excellence in design, engineering, manufacturing, and erecting. Any structure in the United States, Canada or Mexico that has been completed within the last three years and is substantially con- structed using precast concrete manufactured in a PCI-certifed or Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute-certifed plant is eligible. Entries are made electronically and should be submitted by the architect or engineer of record. Winners will be announced in late July 2014. Additional information can be obtained from PCI's Jennifer Pe- ters, jpeters@pci.org or Brian Miller, bmiller@pci.org. Precast foundation user garners Home Builders' Green Site honor The National Association of Home Builders has presented its "Proj- ect of the Year Award for Green Site Development—Single-family Detached" to Clarence, N.Y.-based Natale Builders for Rivera Greens, a local subdivision whose 35 units bear on Superior Walls of America Xi precast foundations. "These dry, energy-efficient wall panels help ward off heat loss and make the basement a more comfortable area for extended liv- ing and storage space in the home throughout the year," says Natale Builders General Manager Larry LaDuca. "We constructed each Rivera Greens home from the ground up with green-building practices and products." The homes meet National Green Building Standard certifi- cation requirements, he adds, and represent the first New York devel- opment to receive the NAHBGreen Award. Licensee Superior Walls of Upstate New York, Lima, fabricated the reinforced Xi panels with 5,000-psi mixes, thorough vertical and hor- izontal rebar placements, 2.5 in. of Dow Styrofoam, insulated corners and bond beams, plus drywall-ready galvanized steel studs. The insu- lated precast wall systems have earned the National Green Building Standard Green Certified Product designation from Home Innovation Research Labs (formerly NAHB Research Center).
