22 • August 2019 NEWS SCOPE MATERIALS Penn State University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering researchers' "Evaluation of Two-Atmosphere Thermo- gravimetric Analysis for Determining the Unburned Carbon Content in Fly Ash" has received the 2019 Outstanding Article Award by the ASTM International Journal of Advances in Civil Engineering Materials. "[Fly ash] is a promising alternative to portland cement to reduce the embod- ied energy and carbon dioxide footprint of concrete," says Associate Professor Farshad Rajabipour, who co-authored the paper with Professor Emeritus Barry Scheetz and Middle Tennessee State University Assistant Professor Mina Mohebbi, a recent doctoral graduate in civil engineering at Penn State. "One challenge with fly ash is the presence of unburned coal/carbon (UC) particles, which interfere with producing high-qual- ity concrete. Correct measurement of the UC content is important to reliably identify 'bad' fly ashes without unnecessarily discarding any of the 'good' ashes." To address current test limits for accu- rately estimating UC content, researchers propose thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which carefully monitors off-gassing and mass loss as fly ash is heated. Pairing TGA with mass spectrometry allows them to eval- uate thermal decomposition reactions in ash specimens to measure true UC levels. The new method allows better separation of the UC from other sources of mass loss in fly ash, researchers contend, and shows that LOI test methods overestimate UC by up to 6.4 times, potentially excluding good ashes from the concrete market. Knowledge gained as a result of the work shows how various TGA test parameters impact the accuracy of results. The study will help researchers design an optimal test- ing protocol with the goal of adoption by standards organizations such as ASTM. TGA project funding was provided by the Pennsyl- vania Coal Ash Research Group, a consortium of power utility companies, fly ash marketers and consultants. New test stands to increase fly ash marketers' raw feed sources Aries Clean Energy, LLC has secured approval to build its first large-scale fluidized bed gasification system, engi- neered to convert 400 tons of biosolids per day into 7 million to 7.5 million cu. ft. of renewable, low-Btu synthesis gas plus 22 tons of biochar, the latter a raw feed for processing a concrete-grade fly ash substitute. Built at the Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority (LRSA) complex in northern New Jersey, the Aries Linden Biosolids Gasification Facility will consume the system's synthesis gas in lieu of fossil fuel. Project officials also cite green- house gas emissions reduction from curtailing the trucking miles and meth- ane release associated with conventional biosolids transfer and land application. "[Our] patented gasification system eliminates the need for environmentally harmful landfilling or incineration of biosolids, while producing beneficial renewable energy and biochar," says Aries Clean Energy CEO Gregory Bafa- lis. "We believe this is a beneficial and disruptive technology that will rev- olutionize the wastewater treatment industry and establish itself as the best available control technology for biosol- ids disposal." In a nod to LRSA and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, he adds, "The awarding of these permits further validates how Aries patented technologies will bring clean and renewable solutions not only to the Garden State, but worldwide."
