FEATURE READY MIXED 2013 DRIVERS OF THE YEAR The 17th Annual Driver of the Year program recognizes Rayfield Harris, based at GCC Midcontinent Concrete's Tulsa, Okla., plant, and finalist Barry Goodrich, based at Cemex's Fairfield, Calif., plant. They were selected by a panel of National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee-assembled judges, who weighed candidates' competence and service skills; number of years without an on- or off-site accident; and, customer and colleague testimonials. Both drivers are to be honored at an awards breakfast this month during the NRMCA Annual Convention in San Antonio, with the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau presenting Harris and Goodrich $5,000 and $500 checks, respectively. NRMCA and Concrete Products cosponsor the Driver of the Year Awards program and commend these exemplary delivery professionals for the service they provide their employers and the industry. FINALIST B A R RY G O O D R I C H CEMEX Cemex Area Manager–Readymix Steven Alexander tracks Goodrich's multiple years of perfect attendance, plus history of quick thinking, safe vehicle operation and site practices, and customer service, noting especially his: spontaneous help on cleaning up after a booster axle hydraulic line failure, minimizing traffic disruption; professionalism exhibited on a Air Force Base pour, as relayed by the project superintendent; and, assistance with peer drivers on truck refueling and chute troubleshooting, both instances eliminating the need for dispatching service vehicles to jobsites. Alexander shared with Driver of the Year Award judges copies of a 2007 note acknowledging another of Goodrich's key contributions: "[The company] and I would like to thank you for taking on a very difficult task of training new drivers. It takes a strong person to have the patience to train in a mixer. Without your help and dedication to mold future drivers, [training] would be a tough task for us."
