CHAIRMAN'S REPORT WILLIAM CHILDS, IV, NRMCA CHANEY ENTERPRISES Chaney Enterprises of Waldorf, Md., is a family business, dating to the early 1940s when Eugene "Babe" Chaney, Sr., began with a small contracting firm supplying gravel for Prince George's County, Maryland, roads. Eventually, the company expanded into construction and projects as varied as hotels and farm ponds. On January 29, 1962, Babe Chaney founded Charles County Sand and Gravel Co., which also held a sizable contract with Prince George's County. Later that year, Babe and his son Richard "Dickey" Chaney founded the Charles County Concrete Co. Together, these two businesses formed the foundation for the company now known as Chaney Enterprises. When their father died of cancer in 1967, Dickey Chaney—and later his younger brother Francis H. Chaney II— took the helm of the company. Dickey lost his battle with cancer in July 1999. During the preceding year, leadership of the company was turned over to current president and CEO William F. Childs, IV. Today, Chaney Enterprises is composed of several divisions employing 323 team members across Maryland and Virginia: concrete; sand, gravel and stone; and, construction materials and supplies. The company operates seven readymixed concrete plants, four sand and gravel facilities, and a 19,000-sq.-ft., contractor-grade construction materials supply store. It proudly serves Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Charles, Prince George's, Montgomery, and St. Mary's counties in Maryland, as well as Maryland's Eastern Shore; Metropolitan Washington, D.C.; Virginia's Northern Neck; and, the Fredericksburg region of Virginia. Chaney Enterprises is committed to seeing that the construction industry and its communities thrive and prosper through ongoing participation in industry and organizations. To complete these tasks, the company sets specific goals and plans, along with the necessary resources to ensure long-term advancement, financial growth and security by earning a reasonable profit. Always mindful of its responsibilities to neighbors and the environment, Chaney Enterprises gives back to the community by donating up to 10 percent of its net profits in outreach. Its philanthropic or- WWW.CONCRETEPRODUCTS.COM AT-A-GLANCE ganization, the Eugene Chaney Foundation, strives to provide for a better quality of life for the communities in which it does business. Also through land reclamation, water filtration, and air and noise pollution reduction programs, the company strives to be responsible in its dayto-day operations and how it impacts the environment. Chaney Enterprises operates state-ofthe-art production facilities and a fleet of late-model trucks. In 2011, the company led the way on industry innovation, designing a new, lightweight concrete mixer that met new federal emission standards while maintaining maximum payload required for its concrete delivery needs. The new mixers are the first to be employed by the concrete industry. Celebrating its Golden anniversary in 2012, Chaney Enterprises looked back on 50 years just as it commenced its next 50. The company will continue to be the best it can be in the industry— for customers, neighbors, team members and the environment. MARCH 2013 | 25
