30 • April 2019 www.concreteproducts.com NEWS SCOPE CONSTRUCTION The 280-ft. (85.4-meter) Mjösa Tower in Brumunddal, Norway, officially opened on the Ides of March, becoming the global height record holder for wood building. The 18-floor development includes private residences, a hotel and com- mercial office space. The structure and façade are primarily of wood construction. The frame consists of glulam columns, beams and diagonal members, while floors on the first 10 levels comprise prefabricated wooden elements, including Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) from Finland's Metsä Wood. Decks for the upper eight levels are concrete, which stabilizes the structure and curtails sway. Metsä Wood promotes Kerto LVL and other engineered lumber globally; subsidiary Metsä Wood USA Inc. is based in Norwalk, Conn. Concrete decks world's tallest wood building Amid a growing schedule of wood-framed commercial projects in California, Colorado and Oregon, San Francisco-based general contractor Swinerton Builders has announced a namesake Mass Timber team. Members will shape the paths for delivering financially-vi- able mass timber structures, working with peers and key partners across the country to develop, design and deliver projects bearing engineered wood specs. "Swinerton Mass Timber represents our commitment to shaping the future of build- ing. Utilizing this technology, we know mass timber will help us build more quickly, more safely, and deliver the most cost-efficient structures in markets nationwide," says CEO Jeff Hoopes. "If you look at our company's rich history, Swinerton was one of the first builders to pioneer steel-reinforced concrete, and I'm proud that we are on the forefront of mass timber building as well."
