32 • March 2019 NEWS SCOPE PRODUCERS "Apply. Grow. Make Your Mark." is the theme of Cemex Ventures' Construction Startup Competition 2019, aimed at identifying entre- preneurs and entities whose business plans or vision align with six areas of opportunity: intelligent buildings and cities; optimization of supply chain management; construction with innovative materials and methods; and optimization of the productivity, efficiency, and quality of the daily management of work on site. Candidates can apply through April 21 for consideration from the Cemex venture capital unit. Once proposals have been evaluated, selected startups will be invited to Cemex S.A.B. de C.V., Monterrey, Mexico headquarters to present their projects in mid-July to an audi- ence of world leaders in innovation, investment, and construction. "We have a large offering for startups that enter our portfolio, through which we commit to build together a tailor-made path to achieve the best results," says Cemex Ventures CEO Gonzalo Galindo. "Beyond pure investment, we offer smart money to understand the needs of the entrepreneur and take advantage of our resources to enable them to lead the construction revolution." Cemex Ventures launched in 2017 to identify startups with the ambition to lead the transformation of the construction industry. Some Construction Startup Competition 2018 finalists continue to work closely with staff, opening markets in new countries, pilot- ing their technology, and exploring investment possibilities. Cemex Ventures leverages the parent company's knowledge of the business with new, leading-edge technologies and platforms, focusing on solving the main challenges in the construction ecosystem through sustainable solutions. It has created an open, collaborative platform, engaging startups, entrepreneurs, universities, and other stakehold- ers to tackle current challenges in the industry and shape tomorrow's value ecosystem. Cemex Ventures opens third competition for funding-worthy startups Applications and proposals can be submitted through a portal, www. Cemex USA Houston headquarters is the first office under the global Cemex S.A.B. de C.V. enterprise to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold Certification. The LEED rating system recognizes high-performance facilities whose owners look to reduce environmental impact during planning, construction and occupancy stages. "Our operations work each day with sustainability in mind," said Cemex USA President Ignacio Madridejos, who assembled with colleagues late last month to mark the certification. "We are focused on reducing our environmental impact, and proud to work in a building that aligns with those values." The producer collaborated with architects at Inventure Design of Houston to develop company offices on two floors of the six-story building. The design showcases the versatility of Cemex products while creating advanced workspaces. An iconic spiral staircase designed to look like cast-in-place concrete links offices on the second and third floors, and features a handrail made of rebar. All hallways in the Cemex suite feature exposed polished concrete floors. CEMEX USA COMMAND CENTRAL: CERTIFIED LEED GOLD The building has been home to Cemex USA's corporate office since January 2017. The 240,000-sq.-ft. structure is comprised of 20 percent recycled materials and boasts additional sustainable qualities contributing to LEED Gold Certification.
