32 • July 2017 www.concreteproducts.com PRODUCERS Lehigh Hanson Inc. will acquire the 13 ready mixed concrete and nine aggre- gate operations of Saunders Companies, whose roots trace back more than a cen- tury in central New York. Set for a third quarter closing, the asset transaction will be effected through subsidiary Hanson Aggregates New York LLC, which has 14 ready mixed, 19 asphalt and 23 aggregate sites—many along the Interstate 90/New York Thruway corridor. "The acquisition will enhance our aggre- gates and ready mixed concrete footprint in Syracuse, Ithaca and the surrounding mar- kets," says Lehigh Hanson CEO Jon Morrish. "These assets are an ideal strategic fit with our existing operations in New York state, and we expect a number of operational effi- ciencies and synergies as a result." Wisconsin-based precast/prestressed producer Spancrete has added two new business development managers to its team in Newnan, Ga. Edward Lee and George Wolfe will serve customers in the Southeast and, management notes, "help maintain Span- crete's standard of precast product excellence [and] deliver an exceptional customer experi- ence in design." Lee has 30-plus years of precast and con- crete sales experience, identifying potential customers, establishing relationships, and helping develop designs that meet owners' building needs. Wolfe brings eight years of precast concrete experience in quality con- trol, drafting and engineering capacities; his business development duties will include value engineering designs to best deliver on cus- tomer vision. ORGANIZATIONS The National Concrete Masonry Association and Interlocking Concrete Pavement Insti- tute honor 142 plants in their 2016 Safety Awards Program, recognizing members who demonstrate exemplary accident prevention and worker protection. Eligibility is based on the lowest number of or no reportable injuries as documented by OSHA 300A logs (or equiv- alent Canadian injury reports) for the year. "The members of NCMA and ICPI are com- mitted to the highest levels of workplace safety," says NCMA President Robert Thomas. "This commitment is demonstrated by the number of safety awards given this year, and it is a testament to our industry that our mem- bers place a high importance in practicing safe manufacturing processes." "Safety is good business and, more impor- tantly, excellent for employee morale," adds ICPI Executive Director Charles McGrath. "These awards recognize both aspects required to run successful [concrete block and paver] companies." NCMA/ICPI Safety Award categories are Milestone (no recordable injuries for five or more consecutive years); Platinum (no record- able injuries for the year); Gold (incidence rate less than 1); and, Silver (incidence rate less than 2).
