www.concreteproducts.com October 2016 • 13 Leading West Coast architectural and structural precast producer Clark Pacific has teamed with the U.S. Resiliency Council, a non- profit organization that aims to establish building resilient ratings, to offer a complimentary webinar series for architects, engineers and building owners. "This series [is] an opportunity to present our case for why resil- ient building is a valuable and important practice," says Clark Pacific President Don Clark. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, SuperStorm Sandy and, closer to home, the Napa, Calif., earthquake, he adds, communities are looking for a more pro-active approach in addressing building resiliency. "Case for Resilient Design" participants will see a) real world examples of resilience-minded projects and learn the value of related design; b) how to more easily and efficiently predict building per- formance; and, c) examples of financial return on resilience-rooted investments and why the design philosophy is good for business. Webinar speakers include SP3 Software CEO Curt Haselton, Ph.D., P.E.; Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Senior Principal Ronald Hamburger, S.E., SECB; and, U.S. Resiliency Council's Evan Reis. The series kicked off last month and continues through Novem- ber. Webinar themes are Resilient Based Design & Risk Assessment; Quantifying and Communicating Resilient Design: A Standardized Rating System; Resilient Design in the Real World: Case Study; and, Financial Return on Resilient Design. Registration for upcoming pre- sentations, along with access to archived webinars can be obtained at www.clarkpacific.com/product/resilient-design. NEWS SCOPE PRESTRESSED Clark Pacific webinar series states 'Case for Resilient Design' ALTUSGROUP LINKS INSULATED PANELS, ASHRAE 90.1 AltusGroup, a partnership of 21 North American producers offering proprietary structural and architectural precast bearing C-Grid carbon fiber reinforcement, has published a technical brief explaining con- tinuous insulation and air sealing requirements and techniques for building envelopes in order to meet ASHRAE 90.1 requirements and realize energy savings. The five-page pdf discusses the evolution of energy standards in building codes, illus- trating their variability across different climate zones. A climate zone map and appendix for climate zone-specific thermal insulation requirements are pro- vided. The brief shares minimum R-values for buildings and explains benefits of continuous air barriers to effec- tively seal joints, gaps and penetrations— ultimately decreasing high building envelope air leakage. The new brief is among 10 AltusGroup documents covering acoustic proper- ties, insulation, rain barriers and rain screens, and thermal efficiency in rela- tion to precast concrete structures and enclosures. The Energy Standard for Buildings Technical Brief references an ASHRAE map designating eight climate zones, from Extremely or Very Hot Humid or Hot Dry to Mixed Dry or Marine to Cool Humid or Dry.
